Indian National Jailed in Singapore for Accident That Killed NUS Law Professor
SINGAPORE: A Singapore court on Friday sentenced Indian national Natarajan Mohanraj (28) to two years and one month in jail, a fine of SGD 2,000, and a lifetime driving ban for causing the death of Emeritus Professor Tan Yock Lin (70) of the National University of Singapore (NUS) in a road accident.
The incident occurred on July 7, 2023, when Natarajan, a construction worker, was driving a lorry. Distracted by his mobile phone, he lost control and collided with the car driven by Professor Tan. The professor, a distinguished academic in law, sustained multiple injuries and later died in hospital.
Court documents revealed that Natarajan had a history of careless driving. In June 2023, Traffic Police had already issued him a notice to surrender his licence before July 25. However, the fatal accident happened two weeks before that deadline.
Even after the accident and revocation of his licence, Natarajan was found to have continued driving on two occasions in 2024, further compounding the seriousness of his offences.
He pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including causing death by driving without due care. In addition to the jail term and fine, the court ordered a lifetime prohibition on driving any motor vehicle in Singapore.
The case highlights Singapore’s strict enforcement of road safety laws and underscores the severe consequences of reckless driving, especially when it results in loss of life.
